Swiss roll cakes are sponge rolls filled with jam or butter cream. They are also called jam rolls or jelly rolls. Despite their name, Swiss roll cakes are not really Swiss. It is said that these delights came from Central Europe. They are traditional German and Hungarian desserts. Swiss roll cakes are very easy to prepare and they can be prepared for any occasion. They can be served warm or cool; with ice cream, tea or coffee. If you're looking for a fast yet elegant and delicious recipe, here's one for you.

All you will need are:

*A shallow, rectangular pan
*Parchment paper
*3 eggs
*1/2 cup of castor sugar
*3/4 cup of self-raising flour
*2 tablespoons of hot water
*1/2 cup of jam or jelly
*2 extra tablespoons of castor sugar

How to prepare Swiss roll cakes:

1. Since butter is not a part of recipes for Swiss roll cakes, use grease instead for the pan. Put some parchment paper on the pan and put some grease on it too. This prevents Swiss roll cakes from sticking to the pan. You wouldn't want that to happen.

2. Next, preheat your oven to 180 degrees Celsius or 360 degrees Fahrenheit.

3. Beat the eggs thoroughly. If you will be using an electric mixer, you can mix it for about 3 minutes. When the mixture is already thick, add in the castor sugar spoon by spoon; do this while continually beating.

4. After fluffing up the eggs and castor sugar, fold in the self-raising flour and hot water.

5. Once done with the batter, spread it evenly on the pan and put it in the oven.

6. Bake the cake for 8-10 minutes. If the cake is already baked enough, it should be of a golden brown color. Don't let it get too brown, though.

7. Meanwhile, take the jam or jelly, and put it over low heat.

8. Once finished baking, take the pan out of the oven and allow the cake to cool for awhile.

9. Gently take the cake off the parchment paper and carefully roll it. Allow it to cool like this for awhile.

10. When the rolled cake has cooled, unroll it, sprinkle some sugar on it and spread the jam or jelly. You might want to work quickly on the filling before it stiffens.

11. Roll the cake with the jam or jelly and make some slices about 2 inches are however you want them.

12. Allow them to cool enough to be served. If you want your dessert cold, you can put it in the refrigerator before serving.

Here are a few more things you might want to try. When your Swiss roll cakes have cooled, you can dust them with some icing sugar. If you're serving the cake for dessert, you can put some ice cream or whipped cream. For the filling, you can try putting in some nuts, cut fresh fruits, chocolate or sweetened cream cheese.
